Step 1 devotional-letting go of self-deception

Step: 1 – Letting Go of Self-Deception

Step Purpose: I admit that I’m powerless over the issues controlling my life and that my life is unmanageable without Christ.

Spiritual Principle: Honesty

Quote: Healing starts when honesty becomes louder than denial.

Scripture: Psalm 32:1–2 (NLT) Romans 12

Devotional Reflection:

Step 1 begins with a simple, honest cry for help. We admit that we are powerless over life's issues and that our lives have become unmanageable. Our best thinking got us here—our way, our choices, and our will have led to brokenness.

Many of us hide behind masks, pretending everything is fine, even deceiving others and ourselves. The worst lies are the ones we tell ourselves: “I’ve got this,” “It’s not that bad,” "That won't happen again.” Step 1 teaches us to stop deceiving ourselves and start living in honesty. Living a lie brings misery. Relief is available when we stop hiding from God and others. As David declares in Psalm 32, confessing our sins releases the burden, and God forgives our rebellion. Honesty opens the door to true freedom and restoration. Romans 12 reminds us that surrender is central to our faith: We are called to give ourselves fully to God, to be living sacrifices, and to let Him transform our minds.

Step 1 is about humility, honesty, and acknowledging that we cannot do this alone. True transformation begins when we stop relying on our own understanding and start depending on God.

Reflection Questions:

Where have I been deceiving myself?

What masks am I wearing that keep me from living honestly?

In what areas of my life do I need to admit unmanageability and seek God’s help?

Action Step:

Take a moment to confess one thing to God today that you’ve been hiding or trying to control. Surrender it fully and trust His guidance.

Prayer:

Lord, help me to be honest with You and myself. Show me where I have been deceiving myself, and teach me to surrender control to You. Transform my heart and mind so that I may live in truth and freedom. Amen.
